Travis - One Night

One Night - Travis from The Boy with No Name

One night can change everything in your life

One night can make everything alright

One night can turn all your colors to white

One night, it’s easier said than done.

My beloved Turkey. My dearest Istanbul. My beautiful people. Stand strong. Do not let tyrants and dictators oppress your very own constitutional right to gather and protest against whatever you believe is right. Protect and defend your freedom. And remember, the world is watching in admiration. You truly are one of a kind.

Stockholm’ün güzelliğine laf edenin dilini burkup kulağından sokarım her gezişimde ayrı aşık oluyorum.
”Oh great, yesterday the U.S. Department of State sent me a message that i should be careful about entering the parts of Stockholm because of the rioting. Today, my Mom sent me an email asking if i was okay because she had seen the news about the riots. Apparently these riots have shocked many around the world who have thought that Sweden was a land of tolerance. I usually don’t write messages on Facebook about what’s on my mind but I just have to do it right now. Personally I think Sweden, like many other countries, has a very serious problem with racism. I came here believing the hype that Sweden was an open and tolerant country with egalitarian values, but i was sadly mistaken. The social and economic gap that I see between the immigrant and native population is huge. The level of racial segregation is also pretty shocking. Ethnic swedes often don’t hang around non-ethnic swedes because of the stigma associated with them. The two groups of people who are most hated are those of Middle Eastern and African descent because they are thought of as people who commit crime, exploit the welfare system, and are too lazy to look for work. I sometimes feel sorry for these immigrants and their children because this stigma will most likely be a significant barrier to them achieving their full potential as human beings and as members of this society simply because of their skin color and ethnic background. I am a very optimistic person but sometimes the realities of life hits you hard and remind you that this world has a lot of improvement to do. I myself experienced racism here in Sweden when i was stopped at the airport security for no reason. I was simply walking through the airport to exit the building just like all of the other white Swedes around me and out of no where a security guard approach me and told me to show them my plane ticket just to prove that I didn’t enter the country illegally. I was totally shocked and made uneasy by the whole incident. This is what people call “RACIAL PROFILING.” Such acts are illegal in Sweden because there must be a legal justification for stopping someone, and the justification cannot be because of race. I promised myself that if I am asked for my ticket or ID or whatever again i will say “NO…HELL NO!!!!!!!!!” I will not give into racist crap like that. Although i do not condone the behaviors of the rioters, i believe that there needs to be a civil rights movement here in Sweden. It is totally unacceptable to have large areas of society be excluded into ghettos, denied employment, and treated as second class. According to the government figures, most immigrants are unemployed, but in reality most of them DO work, they just work in the hidden labor force (such as illegal taxi drivers) because many white Swedes would never give them a job. Look around people, haven’t you notice that most of the small family owned shops are owned my immigrants! Many white Swedes would prefer to hire people with a Swedish name and ethnic background. It’s a crying, crying shame! The immigrant communities need to rise up and stand up for fair treatment and not keep quiet to these injustices. In the United States we have the same problems, but the difference between the US and Sweden is that in the US there are many people and organizations that are fighting racism whenever it happens. The US is more open to addressing racism and dealing with it. They say that the first step to recovery is acknowledging that you have problem. In the US, we have acknowledged that there is a problem and as a result we are making some progress…case in point Barack Obama. I cannot ever, ever image Sweden being like the US by having a person of color as Prime minster. In Sweden, people are too politically correct. As a consequence the problem of racism is not addressed and is left to get worse and worse. Swedes prefer to pretend that everything is all right and there is no racism. In past many Swedes called Sweden a “post racial” society. Unfortunately this is clearly not the case. Sweden needs to admit to having a race problem in order to address racism. Since the riots have occurred, the whole world has woken up to the fact that Sweden is only a progressive, persporus, and egalitarian country for only one segment of society. If you are not part of that segment of society you will likely face significant difficulty in finding a good well paying job (not a low level job) and making social connections with native swedes. The world is in a sorry state economically and socially. Unfortunately Sweden is not showing the world how to deal with these problems; rather it is conforming and giving into the nasty human tendency of scapegoating and prejudice. The rise of the Sweden Democrats is just a microcosm of the significant changes occurring in Swedish society. The Social Democratic ideals of tolerance and equality are rapidly fading away. Sweden may be entering a period of discohesion and social strife. Roits such as the one happening now will continue to occur in the future if this is not addressed. I truly hope there is a powerful civil rights movement for the sake of this country. Otherwise Sweden will be a country just as unequal as the US both socially and economically because of the large underclass that will develop. Personally, i love the Social Democratic values and beliefs but Swedish society must completely embrace them, and that means seeing everyone as equal no matter their ethnicity or religion. I still love Sweden and I plan on coming back to visit some day after my studies are done here. Hopefully it will still be a great country by then.”Stockholm’ün güzelliğine laf edenin dilini burkup kulağından sokarım her gezişimde ayrı aşık oluyorum.
